YMCA of Okanagan is seeking an Accounting Associate to join our Finance team.

Reporting to the VP of Finance & CFO, the Accounting Associate provides key functions such as accounts payable, preparation of daily bank deposits, and basic account reconciliations to support the YMCA operating divisions, including health and fitness, aquatics, employment, child care services, and fund development. As one of the first charities in Canada to become a pre-approved CPA training office, we can now offer the experience requirement to students interested in industry Accounting. Over the course of a 30-month training program, the student will receive all of the necessary work experience to qualify for the CPA requirements as described below. Our first student recently completed the program and is now a CPA!

 

Education & Knowledge:

  • Post-secondary degree in Accounting
  • Preference given to those with a current enrolment as a CPA candidate
  • Highly computer literate and a Microsoft Excel power user; database knowledge an asset
 
Responsibilities:

Critical Thinking/Problem Solving:
  • Participates in the accurate and timely preparation of the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and contribute towards variance analysis with some opportunities for minor decisions. May be required to develop methods for solution of problems.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget and projections for the Association.
  • Participates in the preparation of the T3010 tax return.
  • Performs all duties related to accounts payable including management of the Association credit card plan.
  • Reconciles contributions made by donors and ensure restricted funds are only utilized for those restricted purposes.
  • Issues tax receipts, ensuring compliance with CRA regulations.
  • Utilizes dashboards to report on Key Performance Indicators.
  • Oversees the cell phone plan for all divisions across the Association.
  • Promotes philanthropy and volunteerism through the YMCA's annual Strong Kids Campaign.

Communication (Interpersonal skills & contact with customers/public):
  • Works effectively with people within the Association in the face of deadlines; Tact, diplomacy and discretion are key factors in the proper functioning of the position.
  • Determines the appropriate recommendation to resolve an inquiry or problem in a supportive manner.
  • Provides information on financial statements to managers and/or to provide instruction when clarification is needed.

Accountability:
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality when dealing with sensitive financial information.
  • Errors in work could result in significant loss of time, or resources, having an overall impact on Association financials.
  • Superior accuracy and attention to detail in an environment where tight deadlines and the norm.

The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check/Vulnerable Sector Search issues no earlier than six months preceding start date. The YMCA of Okanagan will provide instructions.
